The End of the Blogosphere

ooheeoohiamjustlikebuddyholly.JPGI recently stumbled across Natalia Yanchak’s blog  which makes for some great reading…she is the keyboardist of The Dears (band out of Montreal whose album No Cities Left is truly a masterpiece and after an entire year of listening to it, I still don’t get tired of it.  It is on my list of albums to bring to the island with me).

When I was adding her blog to my blogfeed, I decided to finally bite the bullet and clean up the folder full of blogs which haven’t been updated in six months.  I felt bad doing so…I really enjoy reading my friend’s blogs but they must have either moved on completely to Facebook or have lost interest in the self-indulgent ways of updating thyself through the Internet.  Ah well.  I’ve left a few of them in the blog folder in hopes that I will see an update once in awhile, but have deleted the others.  So if you are one of my friends and decide to update your blog and you haven’t done so in the past six months, drop me a line saying there’s a new entry!  I’m not going to bother looking for it otherwise unfortunately.

Ah, blogging.  I wield so much power of thinking so many people read my blog and I can control your thought patterns eventually with my swaying words (“Support artists…think for thyself…Smashing Pumpkins forever…”) like a serpent you see in an Indiana Jones flick which can hypnotize the bejeezus out of you.

I’m heading to the optometrist in an hour.  That’s right…the laser eye surgery may have a finite lifespan. Too bad I was young and foolish and never had yearly checkups or else it may have actually been covered under warranty.  Ah well, I’m due for a nice pair of glasses right about now anyhow.  Perhaps some Buddy Holly?

Selling Textbooks

Yesterday I piled all my old textbooks (well not the ones from college!) into my backpack and lugged them with me all day so that I could bring them to the University book store.  They offer a buy-back program and I figured there were a few (read: most of them) textbooks that I would never crack open ever again.

I was thinking I would get some half decent coin back for these textbooks but out of ten of them, I only sold two of them; one sold for $22 and the other sold for a whopping $2!  There as also another book that would have sold for $1 but I enjoyed it so I figured the least I could do is keep it.  The rest of them were not wanted as a buy-back (as in there was already a newer version available or people simply didn’t want them).

I must admit that I was disappointed that they couldn’t take most of my textbook and I had to haul them back home with me.  My next step will be to post them up on the University website in case a student wants an old version of a textbook.

Mental Note: If you want to sell your textbooks, it’s best to sell it as soon as you are done with it, otherwise there may be a new version that is released in the meantime.

For Those About To Rock – Trish, We Salute You

IMG_1715, originally uploaded by palm0014.

*please note that the photo is from Trish’s upcoming album “Out of The Closet”

Last year, the Heart and Crown graced Trish’s birthday. This year…we seek out burgers tonight. Yum!

There’s nothing more I can say about Trish…she’s great, she’s beautiful, she’s caring and she digs sci-fi TV shows, the Blues and Smurfs. She also has a great blog of her own where she provides advice to everyone: http://evilsmurfette.blogspot.com/

Take a trip through Memory Lane to see what happened in years gone by around her birthday:

Other than that, all I can say is that I hope you have an amazing birthday tonight and I want to let you know that you’ll never get another gift from me that is cooler than the Chuck Norris photograph. I’m just saying that so you don’t get your hopes up tonight.

Billy Idol to Ottawa!

billy-idol.jpg In a grand upset which turned over in my favour, REO Speedwagon and Styx have both bowed out of coming to Ottawa for the rescheduled date to see Def Leppard.  Opening for Def Leppard is now…BILLY IDOL!  Holy mackerel, this is amazing.  I am stoked.  White Wedding, Rebel Yell…you can’t go wrong.

X-Men, Sore Butt and Directors

winter_squash2.jpg

– If you’ve never heard of Joss Whedon before, he is the creator of such great TV shows as Buffy The Vampire Slayer (never seen it), Angel (never seen it), Firefly/Serenity (seen it, LOVED it) and more recently he wrote 25 issues of an ongoing X-Men comic.  I recently started reading this series after hearing amazing things about it and I definitely have not been disappointed.  It’s actually the first time in a long time where I was shocked by a few things happening in the pages.  The only other series that really grips me like this is Fables.  If you are a fan of the X-Men and have given up on the comics for a long time, pick up the first run of Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon and Joe Cassady.  You will never be disappoitned.

– Last night Vero and I went to play squash for the first time.  Maren was gracious enough to be our instructor for the evening.  Unfortunately for me, I had forgot to bring the racket I have recently acquired from Claude (thanks mate!) but Maren had a spare one anyhow.

I would like to think that my trips to the gym have prepared me physically for such an endeavour.  While I was not really out of breath persay, my ass was definitely hurting after lunging every which way for this tiny black ball.  I had never felt such strain on my lower side muscles since last year when I was laying interlocking brick with Dad and you always had to bend over.

In the end, it wasn’t too bad and Vero and I really enjoyed playing it and look forward to doing so in the future.  We got the gist of the game down and Maren was a wonderful mentor as she went easy on us and didn’t inundate us with too much strategy.  She pointed out a few key spots to stand around, how we should swing and the rules of the game.  It was tons of fun and Maren said that since it’s the summer, there usually aren’t that many people using the courts so you can play for quite awhile without anyone interrupting you.  It’s also included in our gym membership to the Good Life Fitness Club and the only downfall is the fact that it is across town but that’s a minor point.

Thanks to Maren for showing us the ropes and we’ll definitely be playing against you in the near future!  (Like tomorrow.  Be there.)

– Underneath the ‘When it rains, it pours’ category, Vero has had a slew of interviews and decisions to make over the past few weeks and it paid off in spades yesterday when she went to see her old boss at Army News (an internal news network for the Canadian Forces) and she is now the Director of…something…Video Production perhaps?  Either way, she is pretty pumped about it and I am pumped for her.  This is quite the accomplishment considering the last time she worked for them was for a four-month long co-op term.  She really enjoyed her time there and looks forward to working with them again.  She begins work on June 2 and has a three month contract.  As they are affiliated with the government, the only way she can get a full-time position is to compete for the job which I’m assuming will happen in the future.  Either way, it’s been a long time coming but now we can all call Vero – Madame Director!  Félicitations!

A Night in Montreal

On Saturday morning I awoke early to pick up a package at the post office. Actually, I woke up even earlier due to Mike’s alarm clock going off around 5AM and he wasn’t at home and had not shut it off beforehand. Unfortunately for me, it was one of those alarm clocks which get progressively louder!

I headed to the post office but had not realized that I was reading the wrong ‘Hours of Operation’ and ended up there an hour early. Considering Eric and Annie’s place was just around the corner, I figured they would be up on this fine Saturday morning and so I headed over there and grabbed a bowl of cereal. We also had a quick game of Settlers of Catan which Eric won. Hey Eric, don’t forget to update the Catan spreadsheet.

After picking up my package I got ready to pick up Vero at the mall and then we headed out to Alfred. You see, we were off to Montreal for the night! It was Marie-Claude’s birthday last Wednesday and we were going to surprise her by all going down to Montreal. She was quite surprised when she arrived in Alfred to see all of us there and we piled into a couple of cars and headed towards the big city.

We arrived into Laval around 3PM and booked into our rooms as the Radisson. They had these really neat beds which could adjust whether your wanted your bed to be soft or hard. I thought that was pretty cool.

After searching for a corkscrew, a bunch of people took off to get some alcohol across the street at the mall and unfortunately they didn’t realize I was going to follow them a few minutes afterwards! I could not see anyone so I headed over to the mall in search of the SAQ for some evening drinks.

After hitting up the SAQ I ran through the mall looking for some place that would sell me some juice and water. Unfortunately, this shopping mall had nothing so I toured the neighbourhood in search for a corner store. I ended up back at the hotel and asking the receptionist where I could drive to and there was a corner store across the highway. I hopped in my car, picked up the necessary beverages and headed back to the hotel. Everyone felt bad that they didn’t know I was coming along but there was no real harm done! We cracked a few drinks, called a few people up to let them know what plans were and just reveled in life.

Unfortunately the restaurant they wanted to go to was booked so we ended up at an Italian place down the street. I have no idea what came over me (perhaps a few drinks?) but upon one smell of my pasta dish I really lost my appetite and I couldn’t eat most of it. Very strange. The restaurant was nice though and we had some good laughs.

After dinner, half of us piled into a car and the other half piled into a taxi to head downtown. Unfortunately, Laval is a little off the map from downtown so the taxi cost quite a bit to get there. We ended up in a night club called La Rouge and it was pretty dead in there (but it was still pretty early) so we managed to get a table to sit at for awhile, but they let us know that when the patrons who reserved it showed up, we would have to move. Turns out that in order to reserve a booth on the sidelines at this club, you had to order some $100 bottle of wine (no Maren, I didn’t get to see the name of the bottle!). I thought that it was a little overkill to have to pay $100 to reserve a booth.

We ended up dancing to some amazingly good tunes but then some people wished to leave and it timed well with meeting up with Philipp who was waiting outside. The club was packed to the gills at this point in the night and it literally took me fifteen minutes just to get my coat from the coat check and make my way outside.

Outside, it was pouring rain which wasn’t too good for Philipp, Jean and Catherine (Katherine? Katharine? Whatever way you want to spell it…) but they were troopers and I was happy to see them. We then waited for everyone else to exit the building and once they were out, we decided on the next bar to hit up.

At one point Philipp was way ahead of all of us and then we lost track of him! I think he was anxious to get out of the rain and get inside! I had to call him and we found him again…he had entered a bar all of a sudden and we didn’t notice. I knew I was going to enjoy this bar as we went upstairs and we were the odd men out as I was not wearing leather, my hair was not long enough to touch my ass and I don’t think they served anything but beer in this place. Did I also mention that there was some great heavy metal playing in this place? Awesome. Vero’s friends didn’t really care to stay so they left to head back to the hotel for the night and Vero and I stayed to dance the night away to excellent tunes of White Zombie, AC/DC and a special request for Vero ~ Crazy Nights by KISS.

I chatted with Jean for a bit about potential Nine Inch Nails touring plans to Montreal and whatever Trent was up to with his new releases (we both didn’t know that he would go ahead and release a full blown album within 24 hours of us speaking to each other) and I chatted it up with Catherine and Philipp. Turns out Philipp is going to see Iron Maiden this summer so I may join him for that (although I can’t say that I’ve listened to much Iron Maiden in my life, but I’m pretty sure this is the same tour that Type O Negative is on and I’m a big fan).

I was pretty hungry around 2AM so we left them all to head out to get a bite to eat. Montreal is notorious for its cheap eats in the form of 99 cent pizza. Is it the best pizza? No. Does it fill me up after a few beer? Yes, most definitely! It was nice seeing Philipp and company as I don’t know much longer he will be sticking around Canada. It all depends on how his research work comes along. He said he’s really leaning towards heading to Asia as his next destination and I recommended Singapore solely for my knowledge of a Canadian Dragon Boat Team that he could join over there. 😉

Having Vero and I try and navigate out of downtown Montreal was an adventure and we made a few wrong turns along the way but we finally made it back to Laval in one piece. We snuck into the room we were sharing with Jean-Francois and Marie-Claude but they had just gone to bed also so we weren’t waking them up from a deep slumber.

Combined with a lack of sleep and an empty stomach (and perhaps a beer or two), I wasn’t feeling too good the next morning when we headed out for breakfast. I managed to eat a few bites of my BLT sandwich, but it seems that I lost my appetite over the entire weekend. Ah well. I managed to get a nap in during the ride home. Thanks to Vero for manning the Mazda all weekend long!

In the end, there were a few hiccups along the weekend, but I personally had a great time and it was great to hang out with Vero’s friends in an extended setting. There is nothing like a road trip to get to know someone more personally.

Greatest Bet Ever

I won an incredible bet the other night while Trish, Mike and I were over at Krista’s.  The girls were watching something on TV and I pointed out some guy on a commercial for another show and I said “Hey, that guy used to be in Dawson’s Creek.”  Krista denied my claim which became pretty heated and before you knew it, the gloves were off and the betting was beginning.

I knew I was 100% right so I was pretty imaginative in my betting.  I forget what I laid down in the process but it doesn’t matter as I won the bet.

In the end, I am receiving one case of beer as well as one lunch per week for the next FIVE YEARS while we are working in the same building.

Krista knows that I am probably moving to another building deeper into Gatineau in the next two months so she has nothing really to worry about but I made sure to throw in the next five years as part of the bet since you never know where our paths will cross again.

Betting makes for a wonderful time.  I cannot wait to see what she brings me as she usually has some great leftovers.

Spider-Man Original Artwork Found!

An anonymous donor has given the Library of Congress the original artwork for Amazing Fantasy #15, which is the first appearance of our own Spider-Man.  This is pretty amazing as there had been years gone by when everyone assumed the artwork had been destroyed.

NIN – The Slip

splash.jpgTimeline: A few months ago Nine Inch Nails released news of a new double album including instrumental-only tracks being release.  Out of the 36 tracks, they offered up the first nine as a free preview to download (like a ‘try before you buy’ deal).

This was the second distribution method that Trent Reznor tried which was different than the traditional method.  He first attempted something different with Saul William’s new album where there were two options to get the music: Either download it for free or pay $5 for it.  It was a test to see if we would people would actually support the artists.  As far as I know, the results weren’t that inspiring…I believe only 25% of the downloaders paid for it.

Now, when Nine Inch Nails released their Ghosts album, he hit upon a decent distribution method.  He offered up nine tracks for free and then had a download only option of the entire album, a regular CD version, a deluxe set and then the super all-rare set (2500 copies only!) which had a slew of bonus things attached to it.  Let’s also remind readers that he brought in (2500 * $300) = $750,000 in two days (minus the costs of creating these things).

Fancy that.

The album was subsequently released onto regular CD about a month ago, people bought it, I bought it, it’s an alright album, nothing really special.  But the distribution model really appealed to me.

Not two weeks after the album was released to stores, Nine Inch Nails release two new songs and a message saying “2 weeks.”

Within two weeks, as of today, May 5, Nine Inch Nails has released a new album for free.  An entire album, for free, and from the reviews I’ve read, it is pretty darn good.  That being said, he also said that there would be a physical release available around July sometime in case you want to ‘support the band’ or just have it on a piece of plastic for yourself.

I applaud Trent Reznor’s testing the waters of the distribution method for music nowadays.  I still believe that Nine Inch Nails have such an incredible fan base that he will never lose out in giving away his music for free because his fan base will still buy a physical copy eventually.  I would like to see how new bands can use this distribution model to their advantage.  I think that you won’t see musicians who make millions off of album sales anymore, but they may hit a wider audience with offering free downloads and a physical copy as a supplement if you so choose to purchase.

Download away: http://theslip.nin.com/

If you feel you would like to support a great artist, then pick up the album when it comes out in July.
