Amelie and Daniel’s Wedding

P1060373, originally uploaded by palm0014.

On Thursday morning, Vero and I headed up North to go to her friend’s wedding. Vero was part of the wedding party so there was a lot of work to be done. We hit a bunch of construction past North Bay which was a pain but we made it home in one piece. She kept driving to Hearst and I stuck in Kap for a few days where I can relax and go fishing. I ended up playing Skip-Bo with the family on Thursday night in which Maureen won the game. It’s quite the long game…I think it took us a couple of hours to complete!

On Friday, the weather wasn’t looking the best but we decided to hit up the Kapuskasing River to try our chances at fishing. There hasn’t been too much luck during the summer so far considering there was an enormous amount of rainfall. We went to Rick’s place where we loaded up his boat and then we went to McDonald’s for a bite (bad timing seeing that it was 12:05PM on a Friday!) and finally made it out to the river. The clouds didn’t break all day long but we only had a few drops hit us during the entire time. We ended up getting our limit in a matter of two hours which is great and we spent the rest of the time trying to get a few larger fish, but that was a challenge considering the majority of them were over 16 inches long. If you unaware, in Ontario, you are allowed four fish per day in which one of them can be over 18 inches. So once we had our three 18+, we had to throw a few back which was disappointing!

Let me tell you a story about getting your Outdoors card. First of all, it would have been smart if I had remembered to bring it along with me. Another smart idea would have been to bring my actual fishing rod! I am so used to not having a rod (I received one last year for my birthday) that I completely forgot! It’s a nice open-faced reel also. Anyhow, seeing that I forgot my Outdoors card, I figured that instead of buying another one for $6, I would call the Ministry of Natural Resources, confirm that I actually have a card and get them to issue me a day pass to go ahead without it. They said that was possible and I went to the MNR but then after processing the order, the person there indicates that I should cut up my old card as a new one will come in the mail! What the heck? This doesn’t make any sense? In the end, the MNR cannot help you if you forgot your card. They can only issue you a new one for $6.

We headed back into town and I spent the evening filleting the fish. I found it hard as the electric filleting knife was larger at the handle so it kept hitting the cutting board sometimes which made me not get all the meat from the skin. Also, it was hell with all the flies around me! Argh. I enjoyed it though and felt satisfied after seeing my work result in something we could cook up.

Cook up, we did indeed. We had a small fish fry and then I hopped in the shower and headed over to Maureen’s new apartment where everyone was playing Rock Band. I had a few beer, Jeff broke out the tequila and all was good in the world. I even became a more proficient drummer in the process!

The next day I went downtown to get my hair trimmed before the wedding as it was getting a little shaggy around the ears. Dad hadn’t returned by the time I was done so I decided to jog back home. It was little warm in my jeans but so be it. Exercise is not for those only dressed in the appropriate outfits…it’s to be done at a moment’s notice! I did end up running into the Losiers which was a welcome sight as I had thought I would miss seeing them thinking they were at the lake all weekend long.

Mom ironed my suit and I had a sandwich before heading out to Hearst in the parents new Accord. I was pumped as this is a sweet vehicle indeed. I had the sunroof down and AC/DC blaring. I grew tired of AC/DC after half the trip and switched to the other CDs but quickly realized that the rest of the CDs were Johnny Cash. While that’s not a bad thing, I was a little dismayed after getting riled up from some straight out rock.

I rolled into Hearst around 1PM, showed up at Vero’s Dad’s place and we chatted over a few beer. I ended up calling Ryan (Vero’s friend’s boyfriend) and Melissa (her cousin) and made plans to pick them up in order to get to the church by 2:30. While finishing off my beer around 2:10 I realized that I had five minutes to pick up Melissa! Woops! Luckily enough, we were in Hearst so it only took me 2 minutes to drive over there and I arrived right on time. This was a crucial start to the day as Melissa was mine and Ryan’s date for the night as Vero and Emilie were part of the head table. I succeeded in scoring the first point of the day by showing up in time and we headed out to pick up Ryan at his Mom’s place.

All was going according to plan and we ended up at the church with A LOT of time to spare so we hung around in the beautiful sun, chatted and headed into the church eventually to find ourselves sitting on the wrong side of the church and we had to get up and move. It was a nice church and the Priest looked like a jovial fellow. From what I heard later in the ceremony, it sounds like he has been in Hearst for the better part of his life so it’s nice to see the same Priest who baptised the bride be the same person to marry them.

The ceremony was fine, Vero’s hair looked fine (as opposed to her fears of having a ton of hairspray!) and all went well. Nothing out of the ordinary happened other than the fact that I went up to get some bread and Ryan and I wondered if they ever lace it with something like LSD so we pay attention to the ceremony.

Afterward, we headed back to Vero’s parents, picked up the Mazda to drop off at Canadian Tire, hit up the beer store and headed over to Christina’s place for a few drinks before heading back to the reception. It was good to see a bunch of Vero’s friends again as I have only done so at a New Year’s Eve party a few years ago.

We then headed for the Knights of Columbus hall which was quite large and found a table near the stage. There was bottles of wine around the tables which aided us in our quest to seek the holy grail of good times throughout the night. The wedding party arrived, the DJ’s speaker sounded like the teacher in the Peanuts cartoon and we had to fight our way into getting something to eat at the buffet. It was one of those things where the DJ would call out “I need a white sock!” and the first person who brought a white sock won dibs at being the next in line for the buffet.

The buffet was decent. There was lasagna, pizza and salad. Not too shabby at all. I ended up seeing Al and Annie along the way (two persons I met in the Dominican trip) and they were doing fine. Al was into the ‘cuba libres’ already so I knew it was going to be a good night. Speaking about a good night, Vero was nice enough to present me a gift of six beer tickets! Bonus!

There was quite a gap between the time we had supper (6PM) and the time the speeches started (9PM) but I found out from Vero that they were waiting for Amelie’s grandparents to show up from out of town before starting everything up. The speeches were good ones and Vero and Emilie’s turned out to be a hit one. While I don’t agree with the fact that all they did was rib into the groom and not even offer up ONE good quality about him, it still went over well and I enjoyed their back-and-forth between themselves with the speech.

The party started, the lights dimmed and a bunch of people went to the stage where a grand montage was set up so you can take pictures in front of. Unfortunately, I found this to be an awkward setup as the stage is up high so you needed to get on top of a chair to get a decent picture and even then, if someone wasn’t looking towards your own camera (which was the case most times because the professional picture taker (the Chinese food diner owner nonetheless!) then it didn’t turn out all that well.

Moments of grandness throughout the night:
Seeing Anne-Marie and Steve and having Steve invite me out in a ride in the cruiser the next morning. Unfortunately, that never happened as he got called away but still, it’s the thought of me in an OPP vehicle that was good enough.
Posing/sneaking into a photo of all the girls. This was quite funny in my mind but I guess the girls didn’t care for it too much as I was hauled out of the photo by one of the other guys.
The garter belt toss. Actually, this wasn’t much at all considering I did not get to add one to my collection. 🙁
Chatting it up with Kevin about his self-sustaining, off the grid, house which is 20 clicks away from Hearst. It was quite neat to hear that he powered his house through solar and windmill energy.

All in all, the wedding was fine. Actually, in hindsight, it was probably better than expected considering I still don’t know a lot of Vero’s friends well. There are a few that I tagged along with during the night to keep me company but there was one time where everyone disappeared for awhile and I had no idea where they went.

Oh yes, another comment. The only beer on hand was Bud Light, Sleeman Clear and Coors Light. I am definitely not complaining considering I don’t mind the Bud Light, but I thought it was odd to only have light beer as a choice. Is that the new norm at a wedding? That’s news to me.

At the end of the night, I started cleaning up the place to help out and a tear came down my eye every time I had to throw out a perfectly full beer into a bucket. I was wondering what the concoction would taste like (wine, liquor, beer) but luckily someone showed me the sink to dump it out in before I could experiment! In the end, we didn’t even have to stay and clean up…turns out that the hall staff does that and it’s included in the price!

Unfortunately, Vero had rolled her ankle while dancing at one point so she was in no shape to go out to the bar so we dropped Ryan and Emilie off and got home. Another unfortunate incident was the fact that all the doors were locked! That was strange! In the end, Vero was trying to climb through the kitchen window when Danielle woke up wondering what the heck was going on!

The next morning, I awoke to some sunlight streaming through the window and laid there for awhile. I showered, got dressed and called Canadian Tire to see what was going on with the car. They balanced the tires and said I got 25% off the price because it was the grand opening of the store that weekend! Great! I picked up the car, it seemed alright (in hindsight, the steering wheel shakes a little cruising around 100km/h) and drove it back to the house and tried out some Blue Magic polish on my rims that Rick had suggested. It worked wonderfully. Better than any other polish I’ve tried before on the rims. I’ve fought a losing battle on those rims and the brake dust.

We were in the middle of washing my car when Steve showed up with Vero’s grandmother in the cruiser. Anne-Marie soon followed and we settled in for a great brunch out in the solarium. Everyone was slow moving that morning and I couldn’t get enough liquid into me. Vero and I then packed up and headed down to Amelie’s parents where they had a BBQ for everyone and a gift opening. Considering Vero mentioned that they had 300 people show up the night before, I was surprised to see the utter lack of physical gifts. I guess money is the new thing to give (which…I have an issue with). The BBQ was fine, the couple was fine and the weather was fine.

Vero and I then headed back to Kap for supper with my parents and Maureen and John. We had some good pizza (wango tango style!) and headed over to Maureen’s place for a bit to show Vero their place. We then went back home and chatted with Mom and Dad for awhile before hitting the sack.

For those going up to the North, a word of advice. If there is a road that bypasses HWY 11 from North Bay to New Liskeard (which I have heard is true…Dad said it adds another 25 minutes), TAKE IT. The construction is horrible and we arrived into North Bay an hour later than expected. This is not cool when there is a 10 hour drive ahead of us. We did drop into Swiss Chalet (a pale, pale comparison to St. Hubert) for some lunch and had a nice drive back home.

We did try and get to the theatre to see The Dark Knight and it was sold out (and subsequently sold out the night after as well. I believe I shall wait until next week to try and see it) so we went back to Vero’s place for supper with Vero and Mel.

All in all, a delightful weekend back home. There’s quite a few miles being put onto the Mazda, but it’s worth it considering I get to see the family a little more often.

Congrats to Amelie and Daniel on a wonderful wedding.

Magic Cheese Bag

potter2039.jpgLast night while at the bank machine, an older gentleman and what can be presumed to be his son were next to me at the other bank machine.  This is what I heard (and typing this doesn’t do it justice…I have to sing it to you in person…)

Gentleman: “You get to hold the Magic Cheese Bag!”.
Moments pass…
Gentleman: “Magic cheese bag, Magic cheese bag…(singing)…”
At this point I couldn’t help but look at them and sure enough, there’s his son holding this bag of cheese curds with his head hung low out of total embarassment.
Gentleman: “Taking the money out of the machine…(singing)…”

Hilarious.  This guy must have been high on his cheese curds.  Or the…magic cheese curds?

Thoughts before The Dark Knight premiere

diabol_logo.jpgThe hype is there.  This will be *the* summer movie.  The new Batman flick “The Dark Knight” is showing up in theatres tomorrow at midnight.  The buzz has been around since 2005 when Batman Begins blew everyone away.

Chez 106 hit the nail on the head with their comments about how not only is this movie going to be killer in attendance simply because it’s the follow-up to Batman Begins, but the other side of the coin is the fact that there is this need by the public to see the late Heath Ledger’s performance in the film which has already been toted as ‘Oscar-worthy.’

While I don’t doubt that he will be awesome as the Joker (from what I can see from the trailers, I think he does a better job than Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero ever did portraying the Joker, but at the same time, the beauty of the Joker is that he can be so many different personages anyhow (as a character).  He’s funny, he’s sadistic, he’s a little insane.  So anyone can give their take on the character and it will still stay true to their character.  Now, granted, I am not entirely knowledgeable to the Batman comic franchise and have only been introduced to a few stories with the Joker so if there are ‘troo’ fans out there, feel free to give your take on the Joker as well.  Maybe I’m off my rocker.

Either way, from what I’ve read about the film, it’s going to set the bar for superhero films and I’m excited for that.  I’m excited to see what Chris Nolan has in store for us…the only thing I’m afraid of is that this amazing film will get lost with the ghost of Mr. Ledger and all people will talk about is how good he was as the Joker and not talking about the film itself.  I suppose that’s too be expected.  I, for one, hope that the film is so good that people come out of the theatre and are speechless.

I plan to see it on IMAX next week when I return from a trip up North for a wedding in Hearst.  I’ve read that this film is the first feature film to be filmed entirely in IMAX…that’s pretty cool.  Go see it in IMAX if you have the chance.  For those of you in Ottawa, the SilverCity theatres have an IMAX screen.

Review: Bluesfest – Last Day

On the final day of Bluesfest, I ended up going there on my own as Mike was out of comission with his broken toe and Krista’s cellphone had lost battery power, hence I couldn’t get in touch with her.  She didn’t bother going anyhow.

Of course, I was excited to see tonight’s act as it was the Sam Roberts Band…only one of the more rocking bands out there.  They also had released their new album “Love at the End of the World” a few months’ beforehand so this would be the first time I could see how the songs translated into a live setting.

I arrived in the early evening in time to catch Canned Heat on the main stage.  It was pretty cool to see a music icon like them.  It was a sea of lawn chairs, but no matter.  I had a good spot to check them out.  I watched them for about an hour and decided to head back to the Rogers stage to get a decent spot.  I did end up seeing Danny and Kathy along the way and they said they saw me from afar on the first night of the festival.  They tend to go every year as do I and it’s nice to meet up with them once in awhile.

I grabbed a beer and found a decent spot which was on the cusp of the mayhem which looked like a sea of people ready to rock.  I was right behind a family so I figured there wouldn’t be too much mayhem going on there.  This made me think of how cool it would be to bring Mom and Dad to a concert someday and after the concert, I even found out the Eagles and John Fogerty were playing in Moncton the weekend we were going to Gaspe and I gave them a call trying to convince them to go to the show.

Let it also be noted that there were a few empty lawn chairs directly in front of the family.  This created a small gap in the crowd and is a major point in the story that unfolds.

The Sam Roberts Band came out in full force and blew me away once again.  The new songs translate well in a live setting and it’s nice to see a shakeup of the set list once a new album arrives.  Gone is ‘Don’t Walk Away Eileen’ but here comes ‘Fixed to Ruin’ and ‘Them Kids’.  It was during a slower song (I believe it was ‘Bridge To Nowhere’) that I spotted the first crowd surfer.  Now, if there’s any guarantee in life at a rock concert, this is one of them:

Guarantee #47 – If you see someone crowd surfing during an acoustic number at a concert, you know that it will result in quite the crazy crowd during the night.

Of course, this held true as the crowd became the transportation mechanism for bodies floating across the tops of hands everywhere.  There were tons of crowd surfers for the rest of the night.  At one point I think I counted seven merging into one nexus point and I cringed at the thought of them all hitting that point and trying to figure out what the heck to do.  The crowd was intense.  There were bodies everywhere.  The band was amped up.  There must have been a family contingent from Pembroke to see Dave Nugent as there was a sign being held up in his honour (in which he rocked out for a few times).  Everything was going crazy.

During their final song, Mind Flood (only the greatest modern age psychedelic rocker there ever was), it was hard to focus on them because there were just too many crowd surfers!  Where I was situated, not many came our way because it was near the back of the crowd but sure enough we had one guy come our way and he had nowhere to go so I kind of just pushed him backwards into an area with not enough people to catch him.  He caught onto this fact and quickly landed on his feet.

But then there was this other girl who was slowly creeping towards the area where the lawnchairs were…the gap in the crowd.  I cringed as I saw her inch closer and closer to this area.  She would have taken a header to the ground if it wasn’t for the quick thinking of some woman who grabbed her downwards.  This resulted in an argument and then the woman’s kids started crying and all hell broke loose and of course we enter the point of Mind Flood where everything erupts and it’s like a volcano of electric strings, light shows that would make epileptic kids have multiple seizures and just this force to be reckoned with!  It was quite awe-inspiring and I couldn’t really believe that no one was there to witness this with me (well no one that I knew, anyhow…).

The band left the stage and the crowd were crying for an encore.  Let’s point out that they are not the main act of the night.  But the crowd wanted more.  A few minutes passed and the band returned to the stage.  Sam took the mic and said “Thank you very much!  We didn’t expect an encore so half the band were in the washroom!”.  The broke out into ‘Up Sister’ from the new album which is one of my favourite rockers and all was good in the world.  They told us they weren’t expecting this great of a crowd and were pretty pumped up from it.  I agree that it was an amazing crowd considering a) it was a Sunday night (and the final night of the festival) and b) can an Ottawa crowd really rock?  They have proven to me that it is quite possible and I shouldn’t badmouth them any longer.

New songs that were played:
– Love at the End of the World: Rocked more than I thought it would!  The crowd ate it up.
– Lions of the Kalahari: Always a great slow tune.  Sam’s daughter was on the edge of the stage with giant pink ear protectors.
– Fixed to Ruin: Always a live favourite.
– Them Kids: This opened the set.  Sam broke a string on this one and had a guitar rushed in.  In fact, now that I remember a little more, the first few songs were fraught full of instrument mishaps.
– Detroit ’67: Another fun one that everyone gets into.
– Up Sister: Rockin’.

A great night with a great band.  I can’t get over the amount of energy that was at this show.  I was firing all cylinders hours after the concert.  It was definitely the highlight of Bluesfest for me.

HOPE Volleyball 2008

n1259731998_30054305_9842.jpg

Before I start talking about HOPE Volleyball 2008, I want to put some rumours to rest.

Yes, Mike broke his middle toe at HOPE Volleyball.

No, I wasn’t directly involved in the breaking of his toe. However, this is the third time that I had been in the vicinity of Mike’s injuring himself and now his parents are getting some insurance policy for their son whenever he exits the house with me (which may not be a great idea and they should think about just getting a 24-7 plan considering their son lives with me.) So I don’t know if the fates have myself and Mike’s injury level, but either way, I’m sorry to say, but I always have a good chuckle when Mike injures himself nowadays.

HOPE Volleyball has been decreed my favourite day of the year. It’s better than my birthday, it’s better than Christmas. I really couldn’t find anything that compares. Where else can you get a beautiful day, beautiful women in bikinis, volleyball, rock bands, beer gardens, free stuff given out to you at the beach, and a good event to raise money for charity?

HOPE Volleyball is a charity volleyball event that is held each year at Mooney’s Bay. Our team, Just Giver was in fine form when we arrived for our game with minutes to spare and proceeded to kick some ass then, and all day long. Vero and I showed up at Carrie’s an hour before our first game victory to park our car and walk over to the beach. The year before, we had left so late that we missed our first game. Luckily, we had our head on our shoulders this time around and managed to leave at a decent hour.

The sun was HOT and it was only 8:30 in the morning. I don’t know what the temperature went up to in the day but I’m pretty sure it was around 30 without the humidity. This was the first HOPE Vball weekend for Vero, Mike and Anne-Marie. The veterans on our team were Casey and Melissa, myself and Carrie. It was a good mix and I was wondering if I would be in fine volleyball form.

This was also the first year we weren’t playing on the beach, but in the grass. I didn’t mind the difference although I was definitely more hesitant to dive for the ball at various times. My first serve was horrible but the next time I got up to serve, I must have pleased the volleyball Gods and had a slew of good serves on hand. We ended up winning the first game which boosted us in high spirits.

We had 1.5 hours to kill before the next game and the beer tents aren’t open that early in the morning so we started to walk around, grab some free stuff (CD Samplers, frisbees, hats) and entered in a few contests. You never know, I may very well be the winner of a Pontiac Solstice in the near future!

We then returned to our spot under the tree near Court #62, relaxed and waited for the next game to start. From what I recall, the rest of the games of the day were lost, but we were close in all of them. No wait, we won another one in the afternoon. So we won two, lost three, and the three we lost were close games. That counts as a win in my books. We were all on fire that day in terms of volleyball skills. I was surprised at how well we gelled together.

Once the second game was done, we headed to the beer gardens and started the day off right. It was starting to get a little warm so it was only time to have something to quench the thirst. When we arrived the lineup at the beer tent was HUGE, but then Casey realized that there were two ends to the beer tent so we went to the other end and managed to find NO LINEUP in front of the beer ticket booth. Beauty! We grabbed our beer tickets for the day, bought a few and went up on the hill to relax and watch the opening band. HOPE Volleyball is always a good time to see some local talent in the early part of the day before the big bands come out later. Carrie was disappointed to hear that her fave band LOUDLOVE could not make it. Rumours of a car accident were whispered whereas the more obvious reason came out as well…they were already playing a gig last night and were too hungover to play today! We don’t know the truth, but we know how these things work out.

After a few more beer, we headed back for Game #3, lost it but realized that there was more beer to be drank and headed back to the beer tent. Casey and I tossed the frisbee around for a bit and he was quite excited as the year before, the police on site had asked us to stop throwing it around in the beer garden. This seems quite absurd considering the beer garden is HUGE and there is plenty of space to throw it around. I, unfortunately, am not good with my aim and proceeded to have it land near a group of guys a few times. This is not an ideal situation when there are a bunch of girls I could be aiming for my partner. Woops.

Vero and the other girls showed up later and we also managed to get some food in us in the form of cold burgers and hot dogs. Yum! I can’t complain too much. It’s nice of the organizers to include lunch in with the price of our ticket. The day was escaping us already in the heat as we didn’t even realize that our next game was coming up fast! We rushed back to the court, proceeded to kick some ass, and then I took a five minute break in the shade to recharge my batteries.

Before this, Mike had finally showed up to the event. He had originally needed to go into work for 20 minutes in the morning to oversee some computer install in case something went wrong. Unfortunately, something went wrong and he spent four hours there fixing it and managed to show up around noon. I was excited to see him as I had told him all about HOPE over these years and he was quite excited to see what all the fuss was about.

The bands were coming out in full force by the time we returned to the beer garden and I was rocking out to some Thornley (who is Ian Thornely, mastermind of Big Wreck). I’ve seen them here before…in fact I believe it was the same year Philipp and I stumbled into a mosh pit accidentally and proceeded to get shoved down into the pavement. It wasn’t as bad as a scene as before and Vero, Casey, Mike and I headed up to the front where I do believe my ear started to bleed from the decibels hitting us.

The day descended into madness at that point. I proceeded to burn my pinky toe on someone’s cigarette butt in the grass. Argh. Morons. This reminded me of when Troy had some searing pain under his arm at SARStock and found out it was some guy’s cigarette under his arm! There was quite an army of us up on top of the hill and we just sat there having a good time chatting, drinking our beers and watching 54-40 (a band who everyone knows their songs, but never know who sings them). My only disappointment in the day was that there was some free beer action going on in the parking lot that I missed out on TWICE during the day. Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

The police finally asked us all to leave around 6PM (concerts were done, festival was closing up shop) and on my way out, there was someone giving away a box of apples at the end of the day. I ended up picking it up (probably 100 apples in this thing!) and bringing it back to Carrie’s. The walk back to Carrie’s was a long one and Mike doesn’t know if he broke his toe along the walk by falling out of his flip-flops or if it was while wrestling Vero. Either way, he realized that something was wrong when his toe started turning purple.

I had had enough for the day and when we got to Carrie’s I immediately collapsed on her bed for a snooze. I don’t know how much time passed before Vero came in to wake me up and I had a drink of water upstairs with Holly and Alex and then I realized Vero was pretty hungry (it was 9PM by this time!) so we headed to her place and I picked up some Louis’ Pizza (in which they signed her name in tomato sauce on the pizza! Is that normal?!) and we scarfed it down and hit the sack. I felt like I had ran a marathon and in reality it was 10:08 when my head hit the pillow.

All in all, this was probably one of the better years for HOPE Volleyball…moreso because of the weather. Vero and Mike seemed to have a good time seeing that it was their first time out. I really enjoyed the day and hopefully nothing will interfere with my plans to dominate the volleyball courts again next year.

Review: Bluesfest Day 9

aabb8030.jpg

After an afternoon of trying to stay awake, we headed out to Bluesfest again.  It was a whirlwind affair of heading back to Orleans, trying to catch some sleep, pack a bag for HOPE Volleyball, head back to Krista’s…it was a blur.

In the end, everything went fine (other than the fact that I forgot to pack my shorts into my HOPE Volleyball bag and then had to return home after the concert instead of spending the night at Vero’s) and we headed out from Krista’s on time for the Theory of a Deadman concert.

We all looked pretty tired and the way Krista felt manifested itself in the form of not even being able to finish her beer.  I felt bad for the soul, but I was sure a good night of sleep would help her out.

Theory of a Deadman were there promoting their new album “Scars and Souvenirs” which is a decent album, but more of the same really and they don’t shy away from that fact.  They do know how to rock though and we always enjoy their concerts.  We were very close to the stage but on the right hand side to the point where we couldn’t even see the drummer.

My favourite moment came not in the form of the band or their music but at this little kid on top of his Dad’s shoulders wearing a Spider-Man hat and giving the devil horn symbol with his hands all night long.  That kid was awesome.  He was rocking out so much and was probably 3 years old.  I had visions that this will one day be my kid…up front at a rock concert on top of my shoulders with a Spidey hat.

The band didn’t really hit into too many new songs and I have a feeling this is due to the fact that there are quite a few ballads on their new album and the festival isn’t made for too many ballads.  It’s made for decibel shattering rock!  Which they did.

I ended up leaving after their set and left Krista and Mike to watch Great Big Sea.  I just couldn’t bring myself to go to bed late again considering the gauntlet was upon us tomorrow…HOPE Volleyball.

Review: Motley Crue’s “The Dirt”

thedirt.jpgI had heard about “The Dirt” many years ago when Crystal showed me this incredulous stories she was reading about Motley Crue.  I didn’t really know Motley Crue but must admit that from what I heard, they were a little crazy.

Fast forward years later and I got my fair share of Motley Crue introduction in the past month…Mark from work passed me a few albums to listen to.  Troy showed me a concert DVD and lent me their autobiography, “The Dirt”.

The Dirt outlines their rise to fame by tackling different events with different perspectives.  It is common to read about Vince Neil praising Nikki Sixx for not making a move on his girlfriend and then in the next chapter Nikki saying that he slept with Vince’s girlfriend behind his back.  This was hardcore rock and roll.

I couldn’t put this book down.  It was truly insane.  If you ever wanted to really know what a rock star’s lifestyle can be like, you need to read this book.  It’s definitely not for the faint of heart…one of the more extreme things I read is how they were on tour with Ozzy Osbourne and he proceeded to drink one of the band’s members urine.  Ick.  Ack.

But it is so mesmerizing to read about the dirty things Motley Crue did during their rise to fame.  Heck, Nikki Sixx even overdosed to the point of no return, only to return from the dead after people thought he was dead!

I am recommending this as the must read book of this summer.  It is a tragic tale of one of rock’s notorious bands.  From drugs, to booze, to failed relationships with hundreds, if not thousands of women…it’s all there in print and it’s an interesting, interesting tale.  Heck, I even enjoyed it and I didn’t even know much about the band before reading about them.

Pick it up if you like the occasional shock, and you enjoy the rock.

Review: Bluesfest Day Day 8

th5.jpg

Thursday night was shaping up to be the quintessential night to see Bluesfest.  Not because of the bands, but because it would be an amazing night full of sunshine and beer.

Mike had already been staying over at Krista’s for the week as the smart man that he is so I managed to plan out to meet them both at Krista’s to have some supper before going to Bluesfest.  So far, they have had a good time with their all-festival pass but I haven’t heard any AMAZING stories yet.  I figured that would change.

I headed over to Krista’s around 4PM and didn’t get an answer at her door.  I figured Mike should be there by then so I was a little miffed when I thought he may be taking a nap and not answering the door!  I sat in front of her apartment building and finished reading Motley Crue’s “The Dirt” and then started at the sky for awhile.  I waited for 1.5 hours until Krista showed up wondering why the heck I was hanging out there.  Turns out that Mike was working until 5PM all week long as opposed to his normal 7-3 shift.  I groaned when I realized I had spent a few hours waiting for them on her front lawn.  It wasn’t a total waste as I could finish my book.

After a few beer and some spaghetti, we headed down to the festival grounds (dropping into the Royal Oak for some drink Krista called the Jagerbomb which is a shot of jagermeister and a red bull energy drink) and arrived just in time for Three Days Grace to take the stage.  We grabbed a beer, settled in, and the world was kind to us by delivering us a rip-roaring show.

Halfway through the set, Krista wanted to go find her friend Ben so we headed out in search for him.  We managed to find him in the sea of 30,000 people (bless the cellular phone technology!) and it was good meeting him.  He seemed out of it at first but once he saw we were in the good spirits, we quickly came up to our energy level and we enjoyed the rest of the concert by Three Days Grace.  Nothing much different in the set from the last time we saw them although instead of an acoustic version of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”, they played Alice in Chains “Rooster” instead!

I must admit that the night descended into madness and when the Black Crowes came on, I recollect that the concert could have been a ghetto blaster blasting Black Crowes tunes to me across the field because we were so far back in the field that we weren’t paying attention to the stage, we were paying attention to having a good time amongst ourselves.  Ah well, that’s the beauty of Bluesfest.  The night ended quickly in our minds and we then headed homeward for a bite to eat (Johnny’s on Laurier make a decent schawarma, by the way) and Krista wanted to have another drink at her place but I knew that would be a recipe for disaster considering we were all working the next day so I grabbed my backpack, walked 30 minutes to Vero’s and crashed their for the night.  Luckily the Bluesfest Gods were looking after me and I emerged unscathed and felt pretty decent the next morning.  Krista wasn’t so lucky.

Hermit

So last week I’m getting vegetarian sushi with Krista downstairs and out of nowhere, Jen shows up and says hello.  I haven’t seen her in quite some time.  So we chat a bit and then this conversation takes place:

Jen: So I went to Kap last week!
Me: Kap?  What?  Kapuskasing?  Really?  What brought you there?
Jen (with a bewildered look on her face like someone farted): Uh, I went to see Mart?
Me: Who?
Jen: Martin?
Me: Joelle’s cousin Martin?
Jen (still the incredulous look): Yeah!

Then we chatted about going to Kap and all that jazz while I avoided the situation of asking what she was doing visiting Martin for.  In the end, Holly came to rescue after I phoned her and asked if there was something going on between Jen and Martin and she let me know that they’ve been together for quite awhile now.

I have officially lost touch with reality as we know it.
