Holiday Gift Guide – For No One in Particular

Seeing that it’s the Friday before Christmas, I’m sure there are a few of you out there that are looking for gifts for the loved ones.  I figured I would throw out a few items that I’ve seen over the past few weeks that I thought were top notch gift ideas.  Granted, a few of these may be slightly geared towards me, but there are a few out there that I just thought someone would enjoy.

(For some reason I can’t seem to upload photos to the site anymore.  I have a feeling that I am over the limit of storage so you’ll have to just click on the links for more information.)

The Dark Knight (2 Disc Edition, if not the Blu-Ray edition!) – Hey, if you haven’t seen the new Batman film, it’s pretty good.  Christopher Nolan really did a bang-up job with this film.  So why don’t you cozy up next to the fireplace and watch it this holiday season?  Plus, don’t skimp out and get the single disc edition…take a look at the documentaries that are included!  There are bound to be a few good ones outlining the cool stuntwork they performed (word has it that not many were in the realm of CGI as they new it would be presented in IMAX format and…CGI just isn’t good enough yet to look realistic in that format!).  I notice a lot of DVDs are now coming with bonus digital copies.  They better not be charging us extra for something we can do on our own on a computer!
Here.

Marvel Chronicles – For $30 you can pick up the history of Marvel Comics!  Beauty!  It’s a year by year account of what happened in the world of Marvel Comics.  I wonder what they’ll say about the period of the late 90s where everything fell apart?
Here.

Pearl Jam Ten Box Set – This is definitely a splurge item for the Pearl Jam fans.  For $140 (hopefully it will drop in price by the time it hits store in March!), you can get the super-deluxe box set of the re-release of Ten, their first album.  This is the kickoff product for their 20th Anniversary re-release series of albums.  This thing has everything…a DVD of their MTV Unplugged concert, a vinyl copy of a concert, a cassette tape of the original demo that Eddie Vedder sent to the band…collectable memorabilia, blah blah blah, read the info if you’re interested.  It’s a steep price but it’s a pretty awesome gift!  Doesn’t get released until March though!
Here.

Ticketmaster Gift Card – Both Maureen and the Losiers picked this up for me last year for Christmas and I thought it was one of the more original ideas out there for a concert-goer.  Who doesn’t want to save a little money on these super expensive concerts nowadays?  Case in point – Fleetwood Mac in Ottawa – $150 for Floor, 100L and 200L?  No thanks!  This gift is super and it’s super customized to the concert going crowd.  Word to the wise though…unfortunately, in Ottawa it was kind of hard to use because all events at the Scotiabank Place run outside of Ticketmaster’s jurisdiction.  I did get to use it for my Smashing Pumpkins concerts in Toronto though so I was happy to see it put to great use!

Additional RAM for the Computer/Laptop – RAM is dirt cheap nowadays.  Seriously.  I think I got a 2GB stick of RAM from Futureshop for my Macbook for $30 a few months ago.  You can’t go wrong with throwing this into the stocking and speeding up a loved one’s computer.  All you need to do is sneak a peek at what the model number of the motherboard is and I’m sure the Internet can help you out from there.

Books about Places you Live – I have always been in search of books concerning Kapuskasing.  Vero ended up picking me up a book about the railray which was built up through Northern Ontario which (from the first chapter I’ve read) seems to be an interesting tale.  She also found me a neat little booklet on Ottawa that was written back in the 1960s I believe.  It’s always nice to know a little history about places you live, or places you wish to live.  Seek out a nice book about the area!  I’m sure it will be an interesting read.  For all the Gaspesians reading this entry, don’t forget to look into acquiring a copy of Nanny Ruth’s book on how life was in the old days of living in Gaspe.  It’s quite the interesting read.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry Passes Away

No way!  Lwaxana Troi!  I never knew much about Ms. Barrett-Roddenberry other than she played Deana Troi’s mother in Star Trek: The Next Generation.  It wasn’t until I emersed myself in some Star Trek lore that I found out that she provides the computer voice for the Enterprise, she used to play a nurse in the Original Series AND she was married to the creator of all creators, Gene Roddenberry!

It’s a sad day for Trek fans.

Holiday Buying Guide: TVs

In response to Uncle Gary’s request for information on the television set, here’s some scoop on it.

First off, the link to the television set in question:
At the time of purchase, it was down to $699.

As for the whole 1080p vs. 780 business…here’s what I know and I am definitely not well versed in this subject matter so I’m sure there will be a few of you piping in with your comments.

1080 vs. 780.  It’s all about resolution baby.  Think of your computer and how you can change the resolution size.  Well, you can buy the best of the best and have up to 1080 or you can get the second best which is 780.  I saw both of them side by side and I saw a slight difference.  But if you had one on its own in my living room, they would still be both awesome.

So…what can take advantage of this high resolution?  Can you simply plug your TV cable into it and have an amazing picture?

In a word…no.  The only thing that the Best Buy guy said could take advantage of the 1080 output is a Blu-Ray player.  Even if you subscribe to a High-Definition TV or Satellite package, they currently only output at 780.  As for video games/computer hook-ups, I have no idea.  Maybe they do take advantage of it.  I guess this HD box that Uncle Gary mentioned that you can hook up to your computer to playback HD movies would probably take advantage of it.  Wow, I can only imagine the size of an HD movie that you would download!  What would that be?  30GB?  That’s insane!  Better off borrowing someone’s Blu-Ray disc of The Dark Knight and making a copy! (if that’s even possible.  I’m sure it is.)

So we asked Krista the following:
“Will you be buying HD TV anytime soon?”  No.
“Will you be buying a Blu-Ray player anytime soon?”  No.

So really, it’s kind of useless to spend the extra hundreds of dollars to get yourself a 1080 TV at this point in the game if you aren’t even going to take advantage of it.  Sure, there’s the future to think about, but by the time you want to get a new TV in the future, I’m sure 1080 will be a thing of the past anyhow!  Buy for the now people!

So that’s that.  A last note for people looking into buying a TV over the holidays.  Krista just called Rogers to see if they could upgrade her current digital cable box to a HD cable box.  Not only did they say yes, but they asked if she wanted to sign up for a VIP package which gave her a discount over the next six months (which equals to $20 less on her cable bill each month!) and after the six months is up, there will only be an additional $5 on her cable bill.  How the heck did she manage to pull that off?!  She said it got her an additional 200 channels and a few of them would be in HD (as well as a bunch of others that are starting to be shown in HD anyhow…)

In the end, it looks like a great time to pick up a HD big-ass TV in the near future if you’ve been looking for one.  I really enjoy her 40″ TV and I can only imagine how playing Rad Racer would be on it.  There is also a sweet hookup in the back of the TV to plug in your computer so I guess that’s another way to play HD movies directly from your computer.  I’m not sure what this ‘box’ that Uncle Gary speaks about is all about.  I’m sure he can post a link in the comments section.
