I Choose Yoshi – Vero’s Go-Karting Experience

Sunday morning, Vero and I packed up our cars with the final load of small items to the bring to the house. Our house now looks like an elephant walked through it! We did unpack a few boxes but we then headed back downtown to pick up Chantelle as we were heading out to Top Karting in Hull for Vero’s birthday.

We arrived there right behind Mike and Trish and met up with Joe inside. I haven’t seen Joe in a year or so and it was good to catch up. The rest of the crew showed up and we had a few beer and got ready for the go-karting experience.

I was in Group #2 so we sat it out while Vero tore around the track. There were some great racers in that group…James, Piraz (sp?) and Dave were the cream of the crop. Some of the cars seemed like their brake was on at 90% power! I especially enjoyed how Melissa started out the race going as slow as she could, holding up all the racers, and giving everyone the Queen’s wave.

Next up was our turn and we threw on some coveralls and headed for the track. I was second in line and quickly overtook Mike for first spot. I found out afterwards that the poor guy got a whiff of some gas fumes (the place was full of them) and felt sick the entire race.

I did manage to keep my cool (although Vero said that keeping my cool consisted of an angry looking face while going around the track. I figured it was my ‘in the danger zone’ face!) and kept my first place until Simon smoked me from behind (or the side…I couldn’t really tell what side I got hit on), but then coming up right on my side was Joe and he t-boned me! My knee smoked the steering column from the force and it took me out of first place. Corinne ended up bypassing us all and kept up the pace to win the race. Argh! Mike also ended up in front of me at one point and managed to block every attempt for me to pass him. Well done, but I’m pretty sure they should have given him the blue flag.

I will say one thing…it wasn’t until the end of the race that I realized I was driving like a regular car and I was thinking of cranking the steering wheel. I think I could have done much better if I had realized this at the beginning of the race!

I came in third place which is fine by me. We then headed to Le Cage aux sports which is a neat sports bar in Gatineau. Trish and I split some mini-burgers which were NOT of high quality and Vero ended up with a birthday brownie at the end of the meal for her birthday.

Thanks for everyone for coming out and celebrating Vero’s birthday!

Drobwoes

After realizing that I should be putting 90% of my data onto my Drobo, I finally hit the brick wall in terms of storage space. So yesterday my good friend Trish picked me up from work and brought me to OEM Express which is right behind her house. The guy at the desk was quite funny in that I asked him for the Seagate 1TB drive and then says “Oooh…we don’t have that one in stock.”, then my face drops, then he says “Just kidding!” and we all have a great laugh. Ah, to be the sole employee in a store. You can have so much fun.

I did enjoy a great feed of 1/2 price chicken wings with Trish and Vero at the Clocktower Pub before heading home and popping the hard drive into the Drobo. They claim it’s as simple as that, but it was acting quite wonky for the next hour and I had remembered reading stories about how people’s data was lost after putting another hard drive into the Drobo. Fear rose into my spirit as I thought about how I *just* deleted my photo collection after transferring it over to the Drobo. Why? Because the Drobo has a backup solution. However, I didn’t have enough foresight to think that the Drobo may simply erase all my data.

In the end, everything worked out fine. However, I am going to be smart about this and back up my photos onto both my computer and another spare hard drive so I will have three separate backups. These are pictures we are talking about here!

In other news, Vero is 85% moved into the house. Mike will drop by with the truck next Tuesday and we will move the large items in one fell swoop (or two swoops). All in all, the move has been fairly easy as it can be done in carloads every day, but it is starting to get on Vero’s nerves as no one really likes moving.

Review: U2 – Toronto – Rogers Center

Around noon, I was sitting outside Joelle’s house waiting for her to arrive for the grand U2 trip.  She was already prepared when she pulled up in her car including her excellent concert going shoes which increases her height of 5’3″ to 5’8″.  May I also point out that I notice Bono was wearing the same shoes at the show?

We then headed to Barrhaven to pick up Claude, or rather, have him pick us up as we were taking his sweet Mazda6.  We didn’t have time to peruse his new house as we had to hit the road!

I will admit that I had been stressing out over the logistics of the trip….”Will we hit rush hour if we arrive in Toronto around 4:30-5:00?”, “Will we be able to find a decent parking spot?”, “Will we get a decent spot on the General Admission floor area?”, “Will we have time to eat before the show?”.  The entire summer long I had played it cool and then cracks in my mental foundation started appearing and people were having a good chuckle over it.

In the end, we packed some food for the trip down just in case we couldn’t make it with time to spare.  In the same end, we arrived in downtown Toronto around 5PM with no traffic encountered whatsoever and we managed to find a great parking spot (actually, it was the same exact parking spot that I had used when seeing Pearl Jam the month before, which in turn is the parking lot that Dana parks her car in!) and headed to the Rogers Center which was within view of the lot.

Claude had a few tickets to get rid of so he managed to get rid of them at a loss.  We then scoured some merchandise booths to find out where I could get a Toronto specific poster.  The booths said I would have to go inside to do so and I couldn’t exit the building after.  Luckily, I thought ahead of this eventuality and packed a poster tube to carry it in.  However, just before entering the building we spied another merchandise booth that DID carry the Toronto specific posters so Claude and I picked one up and he returned to the car to drop off the tube.  The poster has now replaced my Vertigo tour poster in my living room.  It’s good to switch it up once in awhile.  I actually like this poster a lot better as it doesn’t have Bono in a ridiculous cowboy hat and is four times larger than all the other members.

We then entered the Rogers Center and made our way down to the General Admission area on the baseball field.  The 360 Tour stage (aka The Claw) was quite a marvel.  It was massive!  I have read a few articles about it…costs $40M to create, takes four days to assemble and two days to disassemble.  It consists of a 360 degree big screen so that anyone in the stadium can take a look.  All in all, it looked like a giant spaceship!

We made our way down to the floor and planted ourselves about five meters in front of the front rail.  Joelle was about four meters away as she wanted to be in the best spot possible.  So to explain where we were in terms of the stage…there is a stage.  Then out from the stage is a pit of people.  Let’s say that pit of people is about 15 meters deep.  Then you hit the catwalk which is a ring around the stage.  Well, we were five meters from the catwalk which was great.  So when the band members would come onto the catwalk, we were quite close.  In fact, even with them on stage, I found myself watching the stage more than the big screen as we were close enough.

Krista, Ben and Vince finally found out is in the crowd (they had come up in a separate car).  They had a beer in hand but I had decided that in a moment like this, it’s impossible to move in and out of the crowd to get a beer.  From 6:00 onwards, no drinks or food were to be had in order to maximize our spot.  Claude, unfortunately, had a headache, got some water which led to him leaving for the washroom at one point and he never made it back to us.  There were just too many people.  There were 13,000 people on the floor, 50,000 people in the stands!  We held our ground.

Snow Patrol opened for U2 and they put on a great show.  Krista introduced me to Snow Patrol and I quite enjoy their second album.  They played quite a few tunes from it and the frontman, Gary Lightbody was quite the entertainer while he laid on top of amplifiers or walked around the stage trying to get the crowd into singing along.  They played all their great hits and we were all impressed by their show.  I was quite impressed when the 360 degree big screen turned on and it was quite brilliant and clear.  What a massive screen!

After Snow Patrol left the stage around 8PM, we waited until 9PM to finally hear the opening song Space Oddity (David Bowie) playing over the PA.  This was it!  The crowd was wild at that point.  Many people were trying to get in front of us.  One girl said “Our friend is right in front of you!”  I asked “What’s his name?”.  They replied “John.”.  “John!  JOHN!” I cried to the people in front of us…alas, no one turned around.  Nice try ladies.

The lights descended and it was a beautiful sight.  Let me tell you something that was extra special about this night….the roof on the Rogers Center was open.  In the history of the Rogers Center, they have only done that for one other band…Bruce Springsteen in 2003.  AC/DC couldn’t get permission, Coldplay couldn’t do it either…but when U2 comes to town…Wow!  The sight was amazing…to my right, the CN tower (which I never knew had a light show at night!  Also…someone on the U2 Interference forums indicated that the opening song had their light show synced to the CN Tower, or vice versa.  Nice!)

The band came out in a stage full of lights and smoke.  They all took their place and ripped into Breathe from their new album No Line on the Horizon.  The crowd was loving it.  I coull tell it would be a better night compared to the night before where I heard the crowd was a little mellow.

They played a string of four songs from their new album…I really enjoyed the live version of the song No Line on the Horizon.  Get on Your Boots is also a fun one even though Vero despises it!

Then the hits came…starting out with Mysterious Ways, they level of enthusiasm skyrocketed.  I couldn’t keep my eyes off the entire scene surrounding me…63,000 fans, a beautiful starry night, the CN Tower beside me and U2 in front of me!  Incroyable!

They went through a good selection from all of their albums.  Claude was quite disappointed that they cut Pride (In The Name of Love) from their set (which was quite strange as it’s a staple song from the past two decades.)

Here’s some general comments of the show:
– First time we had ever heard New Year’s Day in concert.
– Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of…acoustic…excellent.  I had a laugh when Bono was chatting away while The Edge got his guitar and mic set up and he finally said “Edge, what’s taking so long?” and it turns out that his ear-speaker hadn’t been working for the last couple of songs so they had to fix it.  Also, at one point, Bono stopped the song and asked the apartment buildings overlooking the Rogers Center to flick their lights on and off if they were watching.  Sure enough, a slew of apartments started flicking their lights on and off!  We loved it, the crowd went wild.  Imagine the view from up there!
– During City of Blinding Lights, Bono pulled up a boy from the pit and ran around with catwalk with him and lent him his glasses for awhile.  It was quite a great moment for that kid.  The newspaper had interviewed Lucas the next day and he was ecstatic!  Turns out that a woman I work with knows the kid’s parents.  Fancy that.
– The remix of I’ll Go Crazy was quite fun and different to hear.  Larry Mullen Jr. walked around the catwalk pounding his jambe drum.
– I should mention that the cooler stage device was the big screen which actually separated to form a large bee-hive cone at various parts in the show!  Also, the band had a couple of bridges linking the main stage to the catwalk.
– Walk On was an interesting ending of the main set.  They had volunteers with cut-out masks of Aung San Suu Kyi fill the catwalk.
– I personally felt that the main set ended on a down note with Walk On.  I think if they would have continued with One and Streets, it would have been killer.  But they left the stage for a few minutes, returned to play One and then played Streets.  Streets usually evokes this powerful energy in the crowd and I didn’t feel it this time around.  Something was missing.  The second encore started out awesome with Ultraviolet and Bono with his coat full of frickin’ lazer beams (!!!), ended with some killer version of With or Without You which had me yanking Joelle back over to our area and then they ended with Moment of Surrender from the new album.

All in all, while the show was quite amazing, I preferred the structure of the set lists from the previous Elevation and Vertigo tours.  The energy was lacking near the end of the show and I think if they cut out one encore and coupled One and Streets into the main set, it would have made a giant difference.  I can’t complain too much though.  It was a really, really great show and I hope that everyone out there reading this gets a chance to see them when they’ll return to North America in 2010.  I will probably go out again.  But we’ll see.

After the concert, it took us awhile to find Claude but we did, and then we headed for home.  Unfortunately for us, our trip was marred with the disaster of construction on the 401 Express Lane.  It was my own fault…I read the sign on the DVP that said “Express Lane closed for Construction.” but when we saw people entering it I said “Let’s take it!  Maybe the sign is wrong!”.  Sure enough, it was not wrong and it took us 45 minutes to crawl two kilometers while we stared at the collector lanes zooming by.

We arrived in Barrhaven around 4:30AM, picked up my car and then headed for Orleans.  5AM I snuck into the house and stayed up for awhile.  I guess my body was trying to compensate for staying up that late and my brain was saying “It’s alright, we don’t need sleep!”.  But as soon as my head hit the pillow, I slept like a baby until 3PM the next day.

Good times were had all around and I think for Vince, Krista and Ben’s first time, it was legendary.  I did manage to get a bootleg of the concert which isn’t half bad and I have a lead on a DVD of the show as well that I may pursue.

Teargarden by Kaleidyscope

The new album from the Smashing Pumpkins has an interesting distribution method.

The album will be 44 songs (!!!) and will be entirely free for all. The first song from the album is to be released near Hallowe’en of this year and then each song will be released shortly after that. An interesting concept which allows for every song to get it’s due chance in getting into our psyches.

For the fanatics like myself, 11 Eps with 4 songs each will be released along the way in some form of limited edition box set type packaging. There may also be demos included and other bonus features that they are working out.

Then when the entire album is released for free, there will be a deluxe box set of the entire album being sold to all but at the same time, not rehashing what was released with the Eps.

All in all, out of all the new distribution models we’ve seen in the past, I enjoy this method quite a bit.

As Trish pointed out last night while chatting with her, the Pumpkins have essentially realized that there are two types of fans out there…those that will download the new music no matter what (Hello Matt!) and not pay anything for it, or the fanatics that want every little bit of merchandise that the band releases (Hello myself!). An interesting point. Mike pointed out that there are those people in the middle who simply want a regular CD of the band and I’m not sure how they fit into the picture. Clearly, they can download the album for free and should be satisfied with burning a CD…maybe along with some free artwork as well…but to get a major distributor to produce and distribute CDs to go into stores…I think the whole point is that the band is trying to shy away from this tried and true method because they just don’t make a lot of money off of this method.

Look at Trent Reznor’s release of the Ghost I-IV album in my post (talked about in my post here.  Mental note, copy the text from a link in the future!) where he scored a lot of money from his sale of $300 limited edition (2500) sets.

Hey, if this distribution method brings more money in the pockets of the band, more power to them. Why shouldn’t they be rewarded for the music they create for us?

Of course I’m excited for the new album to start rolling out over the next year. I hope you are too!

u2 – Toronto – Tomorrow

Alright, I’ll admit it. The excitement is getting to me. I’ve been fairly blah about the whole thing until I saw the news that the Skydome is opening for the concert and it’s the second time it’s done that in concert history. The first time was in 2003 with a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Will I be part of history?

Heck yeah.

Claude, Vince, Krista, Ben, Joelle and I are about to embark on a legend…wait for it…dary trip.

Notes for Birthday-goers

If you are going to bring your girlfriend for a birthday dinner and she says she wants to go to Milestone’s, make sure when you mention there is a Milestone’s in Gloucester that it is not actually Moxie’s.

In the end, we went to East Side Mario’s. Woops?

Happy Birthday Vero!

Happy Birthday to a lovely woman who’s gift is the fact that she gets to move to Orleans very soon.

Also, a happy birthday to my musical brother in arms…Troy. Heck, it’s only ten days late. But he’s probably emerging from a hibernation hangover right now.

Jog Around The Canal

Melissa opened up her own Running Room type thing where we essentially get together and…run! Seeing that time is on my side these days, what better way to spend time with friends?

I met up with the Valenti clan and met Anthony and Gabby (although I must wonder if I did meet them years ago? I must have.) and then we found Melissa and Mike along with Lola and Gigi. Rounding out the pack was marathon runner James who ran the circuit and drove home by the time we were finished? I was thinking he had done a second run but no, he was back home! James has always struck me as quite the athlete ever since I’ve met him. I shall try and keep up with him the next round.

I am not sure what it was…the beautiful scenery of the Canal, the eight year old kid next to me to keep me company, or maybe the fact that I haven’t been out jogging in awhile…but it seemed like so much less of a chore than it does while jogging around the suburbs of Orleans. I can’t put my finger on it. I find it grueling to jog around Orleans. I just go by house upon house and it’s quite lackluster. Perhaps I need to find a more scenic route to jog along. Or perhaps it’s the conversation that passed the time more? I shall do a scientific study.

Hey, what do you know…I feel like blogging again. It’s been awhile old friend. Hopefully I’ll be back for awhile now with my thoughts.

If you feel like going for a jog every Thursday with us, come join us! It doesn’t cost anything like all those other organized sports in town.

The Beatles Remasters – Reviewed

To Troy or to anyone who cares…

If you’re looking at getting just one boxset from the Beatles Remasters series, I will have to vote for the Mono Set after perusing both sets this evening.

A little background from a technical viewpoint…in the early 60s, stereo mixes of albums were made to cater to the elite…there were only fanatics who owned stereo systems. Hence, mono mixes were made first, stereo secondly.

Then over time, stereo gained the upper hand to the point that the final two Beatles albums, Let it Be and Abbey Road were mixed solely in stereo.

Somewhere during the middle of the Beatles tenure, there were both mixes available. You simply picked out the mix that worked with your stereo (although I’m assuming that both mixes would work on a stereo system).

Another important fact to note is that around the time Sgt. Pepper came out, the Beatles became quite interested in the mixing aspect of albums and actually took time to help with the mono mix of the album whereas they didn’t bother sticking around for the stereo mix. Therefore there are differences between the albums…some minor (little sound effects added/subtracted) and some major (entire songs sped up or slowed down which changed the pitch of the song).

So with that knowledge, I would like to think that if there was a definitive mix to listen to, it would be the Mono mixes.

Now, onto the actual box sets.

The mono set is beautiful. Bee-aauuuu-tiiii-fullll. They recreate the albums in the vinyl format they were released in years ago. They come in a plastic dust jacket. You pull the album out and it’s a recreation of the vinyl record…even the back is an exact recreation with the funny little stories about the UK’s biggest band at the moment…The Beatles! If the vinyl was a gatefold, then it opens as such. All inserts to the album are in there…the cut-out badges for the Sgt. Pepper album…the fold out poster for The White Album (although this seems to also be part of the Stereo version as well…). When you pull out the actual CDs, they are in another dust jacket, but right next to them are the actual paper sleeves that they would come in, recreated to the minor details…such as the psychedelic prints on the Sgt. Pepper paper sleeve.

Quite the attention to detail and I can’t rave enough about it. The set also comes with a 44 page booklet full of essays concerning mono mixes as well as photographs.

All in all, I LOVE the Mono Set. A lot of thought was put into it. Granted, the set does not come with Abbey Road or Let It Be (as they were not mono), but you can pick them up separately. The Mono Masters also is different from the Past Masters (in that the Past Masters is the stereo version with a slightly different track listing).

The stereo set is larger in size to accommodate the larger size of each individual CD package. The packages tend to be a triple gatefold design with a large booklet with extended liner notes, historical recording notes and never-before-seen photographs. The other side contains the CD. Did I mention that the labels on the CDs are recreations of what were on the original vinyls labels? Neat!

All in all, the booklets in the stereo versions are better considering they give a lot more information on the historical significance of a particular album, whereas the Mono album has whatever came with the album originally.

The box itself is nothing special…it simply holds the albums in two stacks. If you were ambitious, I would suggest foregoing the stereo box set, but buying them individually and picking up the collectible ‘Box of Vision’ holder for your CDs and it comes with a book with album cover photos in it. The guy at HMV was trying to sell it to me and I said “Ah, $90 seems a little steep for something that simply holds my CDs.” where he commented “Spoken to the man who just spent $500 on Beatles albums.” Nice.

The only bonus that the stereo box set would have over buying the album individually would be that it may be a little cheaper if you plan on buying all the albums and it also comes with a DVD with all the mini-documentaries. The mini-documentaries are on each stereo album, but you have to watch them individually on your computer whereas this is on a DVD. Meh, not a big deal. Did you know ‘meh’ is now an actual word in the dictionary?

So to end off my thoughts, buy the Mono set. You won’t be disappointed. Pick up Abbey Road and Let it Be separately to fill the set.

Thoughts on Disney-Marvel Merger

In a play from left field, Disney has purchased Marvel Entertainment for 4 beeelion dollars. That’s a good chunk of change and I’m wondering how it’s going to affect the beloved Marvel empire (both the comics and film areas).

All in all, on the comics side, I think it will be better. I don’t think that Disney is going to force toned down comic books to its wide audience of above thirty year olds. I think Marvel Comics know what their fans want and that’s to experience larger, more in-depth storyline. What I can see happening is a resurgence of kids themed books, much like the Marvel Adventures line of comics which are geared for the tots.

I also think that being part of a large empire like Disney will allow Marvel to not be as worried when the comic book business ebbs and flows. This isn’t the early 90s anymore (although one may wonder with the resurgence of 90s characters all of a sudden on the Marvel landscape!), and they have just increased their price on a lot of books to $3.99 for a single book. I would hope that they would lower the price in the future but I know there’s a fat chance of that.

As for the film side, Marvel does films best when they are left to their own devices. All the Punisher films? Meh. But they were created by outside studios. Iron Man, Hulk, etc.? They are great (except for the pile of bantha dung which is the first Hulk film) and it’s nice to see little cameos of characters within each film. This can only be accomplished by having all the films reside under the Marvel imprint.

I don’t think there will be much harm in the merger…you won’t see Spider-Man sporting some Mickey Mouse ears anytime soon like all the newspapers are showing this morning. I think it will allow the Marvel empire to grow in terms of merchandising and that can’t be a bad thing to a fan like me.
