Batch #1 – Canadian Red Ale

I started my first batch of beer tonight.  After a few hiccups along the way (trying to figure out why I had a can of Light Malt Extract (UCM) instead of corn syrup…turns out that it’s supposedly a better substitute) I finally buckled down and started my first batch along with my trusty partner in life, Vero.

I was very worried about the sanitization process so I made sure everything was squeaky clean.  I then added the malt extract mixture of ‘Canadian Red Ale’ along with the light malt extract and let that boil for 45 minutes, stirring a few times during the process.  Vero was gagging over the smell whereas I thought it was quite a nice smell!

Afterward the tricky part was trying to lift this 20L pot with boiling contents and insert into the 6.5 gallon carboy.  What a task!  Some of it ended up splashing up and I’m glad it didn’t go in either of our faces!  But in the end, it was now in the carboy, safe and sound.

However, I had to wait and let it cool until it reached anywhere between 60 – 75 degrees.  And the thermometer I had definitely wasn’t long enough to insert into the carboy so I had to tip it each time I needed to get a temperature reading.  Note: Buy a longer thermometer for next time!  This process took 1.5 hours as it just wasn’t losing its heat.  I got smarter along the way and placed it outside for awhile to cool down.

Finally the temperature seemed to be about right and I inserted the hydrometer and the reading wasn’t bang on what it needed to be, but I’m not sure how to adjust that.  I’ll have to ask my compatriots in brew-making what I should be doing.

Either way, the temperature was right to add the yeast in and I did so, popped on a fermentation lock and hauled the carboy downstairs in a nice dark place.

I’m really hoping that I didn’t mess up something along the way.  I have had many people in the past few weeks tell me how they tried to make beer and nothing really came of it.  However, I do know a few other people who had no problems so I hope I fall into that category.

I personally wish to create a dunkel beer but I heard that will take some time…so for the time being I will be content with my ‘Canadian Red Ale’…at least 60 bottles worth!

Update: Batch #1 was bottled nine days later.  I had noticed that the fermentation had subsided so I figured it was ready to go.  However, I had not taken a hydrometer reading for 2-3 days prior to see if it had remained the same.  If something is bad with the batch, this may be one reason.

As in the email I wrote Troy, the bottling process was a total disaster last night.  TOTAL disaster.  I mean, in the end, I managed to get it all bottled, but a pain in the ass.

First off, I boiled the caps like the book asked for but then I realized that it was probably meaning metal caps and not plastic ones so all the rubber underlays shrivelled up.  I didn’t think this would be a big deal until I started capping the beer and it wasn’t sealing!  Good thing I had picked up 2 dozen new ones from Defalco’s that day.

Then there was the siphon.  It took me awhile to figure out that as long as your hose is ABOVE your carboy of beer, it won’t come out the end.  Much beer was sprayed, spilled and generally applied to my general working area.  It doesn’t help that I was down in the storage room which has a sink, but also a bunch of crap all around that got sprayed with beer…my vinyl records, the floor, random boxes, the floor again…argh!  What a pain in the ass.  At one point I got beer in my slipper and a good splash on my jeans which made me proceed to bottle the rest of it in my underwear!

As for sanitizing my bottles, I mixed 2oz of bleach to 5 gallons of water. I did attempt to sanitize the night before but then I realized that this would be a bad idea so I sanitized them once again right before bottling.  I had originally put them on some sort of rack that would have the bottles dry out upside down.  To go ahead with my sanitization, I simply took this bottle washer device, put it in the sanitized water, attached my bottle, gave it a few squirts and voila, it’s done.  However, I’m not sure if that cleaned it up enough so this also might explain if my batch comes out bad.

Carbonation…I boiled 3/4 cup of dextrose in a pint of water then I added it to a pail.  THEN I took the fermented carboy of beer -> siphoned it to the pail of dextrose -> then I siphoned the pail of beer/dextrose to bottles.  In the book I was reading they said this was a safter method than putting sugar into each bottle as it would be a more uniform amount of dextrose (as it had all mixed together) instead of filling each bottle individually.  I realize now that I didn’t stir the mixture of dextrose and beer.  Here’s to hoping I get some carbonation out of it!

I’m also a little worried about the bottling itself.  I used some 2L litre pop bottles, some 500ml plastic beer bottles and some glass jugs that I had some Beau’s Bogwater in.  The glass jugs don’t seem to have any carbonation in them, but they were also the first ones I filled up.  Perhaps the dextrose wasn’t mixed into the beer completely, therefore my first siphons didn’t have much dextrose to produce carbonation?  It doesn’t look like they have fizz, but they also don’t have a nice rubber seal under the cap like the plastic ones do.  Maybe I can’t get away with using those big jugs when homebrewing and they can only be used with professional breweries.

The 2L pop bottles and the 500ml beer bottles SEEM to have some fizz in them so I’m happy about that.

In the end, I ended up with:

3 x 2L glass jugs, 12 500ml beer bottles, 3 x 2L pop bottles = 18L of beer or 52 beer.  A little off the mark from the 60-65 bottles that it claims on the package, but I equate this to not filling it up as much as I could have (I couldn’t figure out where the 5 gallon mark was on the carboy…must mark it for the next time!), as well as about a dozen beer spilled on the floor during the bottling process!

All in all, I was quite confident on the initial fermentation, but with the bottling, there were a lot of variable in play that made me wonder if it will come out alright.  I definitely need a second person to help me out in the future.

Update #2 – Friday evening, Feb 18, Mike and I cracked open a 2L bottle of Canadian Red Ale which had been sitting in the snow for a few hours to chill.  This was an amazing night to try out the beer as it was +11 during the day and we had the BBQ out.  Vero and Andreane were quite scared of what would happen…would we die from the beer?  When I cracked the bottle, there was no ‘pop’.  So, it was quite lacking on the fizz front.  We did pour a little into each glass and took a swig…not bad!  Not bad at all!  I was quite excited.  It definitely needed a little carbonation and we made the mistake of adding tonic water thinking it would have the same effect as club soda.  Not so and we had a little extra sugar to deal with now.  The next pint of beer was sans tonic water so it tasted a whole lot better.  All in all, I think it was a success in terms of taste but a failure in terms of carbonation.

The next night we had picked up a jug of beer (stored in a Beau’s Beer jug) and brought it back to Mike’s for his brother, myself and Mike to have.  To our surprise, we opened the jug and a nice ‘pop’ erupted and you could see a little foam starting at the top.  GREAT SUCCESS MY FRIENDS!  We poured the beer in anticipation and it was glorious.  I was disappointed we didn’t bring another jug along for the ride, but this would have to do.  It was a really good taste…some people mentioned a little caramel taste to it and I thought it was closer to a Dunkel (which is why I’m making beer in the first place).  I even had to phone Dad to tell him the good news as everyone around me were doubtful that the beer would amount to anything good.

So my only question at this point is the carbonation and I’m wondering if the 2L pop bottles had anything to do with it.  If you remember, I did not stir up the corn starch with the wort.  So in theory, the starch would be at the bottom and only the last bottles being filled would have the most carbonation.  But I had filled the Beau’s jugs first, the 2L bottles second and the individual bottles third.  So the Beaus had enough carbonation, why didn’t the 2L?  I’ll have to keep my eye on that.

Music Listening Trends – last.fm

I really enjoy how last.fm tracks my music listening habits. While it’s not a perfect science because it doesn’t keep track of what I listen to in my car (which accounts for a big portion of my day), it gives a good indication as to what I’m listening to (or what I’ve left playing on repeat all night long which will skew the results).

As of today, here’s my top 25 list:

1. Pearl Jam (naturally)
2. Smashing Pumpkins (in terms of live music, Pearl Jam shall always trump…studio-wise, Da Pumpkins)
3. The Beatles
4. Gordon Lightfoot (I was on a Lightfoot kick before I saw him last year)
5. The National (Who hasn’t listened to Boxer a million times?)
6. Breaking Benjamin (clearly a case of ‘left on repeat’)
7. Cat Stevens
8. Jonathan Painchaud (one of my favourite Francophone songwriters. His melodies the Beatles.)
9. Sam Roberts
10. Nirvana
11. The Dears
12. The Eagles (another classic case of ‘left on repeat’ but not exactly…one day while Vero was working on some school work years ago, she had the Hell Freezes Over album running for approximately 8 hours!)
13. Nine Inch Nails
14. Matt Mays + El Torpedo (probably all from their Terminal Romance album)
15. 30 Seconds to Mars
16. M. Ward
17. Our Lady Peace
18. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
19. Muse
20. Malajube
21. Coldplay
22. U2
23. Mogwai
24. Massive Attack (uhh…that must have been a ‘left on repeat’ entry)
25. Weezer
(and bonus #26!!!)
26. Myself. (Cool!)

It’s really interesting to see the list in writing. I mean, I can tell people who my favourite listens are, but here it is with scientific proof. I do find it strange to read that I’ve listened to the Smashing Pumpkins – A Song for a Son 16 times…when I think back I think “I definitely listened to it more than that!” But maybe not?

Skinny Couch Potatoes

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/health/possible/4093879/story.html

I had a good laugh when I was reading this article about how fat people can be more fit than skinny couch potatoes. Classic line.

Anyhow, interesting read but it’s not a revelation to me. I know many larger people who can do 100 more jumping jacks than I can.

In other fitness news, Vero and I are on the fitness kick and we tried out the Beachbody Insanity Workout Video at home last night. Eric had acquired it and he said it was pretty tough so I thought I would give it a go. I’m trying to find the workout that best suits what I want to accomplish in life…and I figured I should try out one of those workout videos in the comfort of my own home to see if I would have enough motivation to do it, and to see if our house was a good size for two people working out.

All in all, the basement was fine until we hit the exercises which require us to jump high into the air. We just did a little bunny hop so we didn’t go through the ceiling! I enjoyed the Beachbody Insanity workout as I was sweating bullets at the end as well as having a hard time accomplishing a lot…if I were able to master all the moves they wanted me to, I would think it was a lame workout video.

Anyhow, I enjoyed it while Vero said she didn’t break a sweat, but she said it was hard enough.

Van Damme, Move Aside

Last night, Vero and I headed to Embrun to try out a kickboxing class. Now this is different than a cardio kickboxing class where it’s an hour of pure cardio…as in you do not stop. As in, perhaps I could have died.

We took a beginner class which showed up some basic moves and gave us a taste of what we would be signing up for. It started out with some stretches (where I realized that there’s no way I was as flexible as everyone else) and then five of us beginners went into a separate area and got some beginner instructions which showed us some typical punching and kicking movements. After we ‘mastered’ those, I partnered up with Vero and she held onto some pads and I got to punch and kick them and then we switched. Then we grabbed the medicine ball (where the heck did a ball get a name like that? It was like a taste of bad medicine!) and did some strength training…lifting the ball over our heads, doing sit-ups, etc.

All in all, this is what kickboxing seemed to be about. I had fun with Vero but now I’m wondering if it is not lined up with my goals of what I want to get out of fitness. I essentially want a good workout and I found that I was dying after cardio kickboxing whereas I was able to live a little better after this kickboxing session. However, I’m not saying it’s easy…it’s hard! Very hard.

I think I will see what Vero decides as well and perhaps look into other activities as well. Now that there is some snow on the ground, perhaps we can go cross country skiing again. The one thing I am afraid of is falling into the ‘gym-trap’…where I sign up for an extended period of time with good intentions and then just waste my money by not going. I would rather drop in when I feel like it, pay a little extra premium and get what I want out of it.

74 Minute CD

http://gizmodo.com/5729864/why-the-cd-is-74-minutes-long

I just read this fascinating read about (potentially) why a CD is 74 minutes long. Turns out that someone said “We need to make sure Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony can fit onto a CD.”

Fascinating! I guess I just assumed it was due to size restrictions, but when the big guys are around the table debating what size it SHOULD be, I guess the CD could have been smaller or bigger than we thought until someone said “Ninth Symphony or Bust!”

Visiting Friends = Fun!

Sunday consisted of meeting up with a slew of friends. We went to Perkins for brunch to see Maureen and Shannon who were in town for the weekend and a big gang showed up. Topics ranged from Miss November (from Kapuskasing!) to Joelle’s birthday which seemingly involves a girls-only affair which we ridiculed because it always seems that girls like to do things on their own and the guys get left at home.

The rest of the day had Vero and I scouring store after store for certain items we want to get for the house. New bathroom designs, closet designs, lamps and BBQ lighters were the topics of the afternoon. By 3:30 we realized it was kind of pointless to head back to Vars only to turn around again to go to Eric and Annie’s so we took a nap for a bit.

Supper at Eric and Annie’s was fun. Philippe must have been hopped up on some sugar as he was tearing around the house most of the night. I find the dynamic between him and his brother to be interesting…Philippe seems to be the outgoing one while William has a good time just hanging out. Granted, it wasn’t long ago when Philippe was quite shy…so maybe it just takes a few years to see the true character in a person. My favourite comment of the night was hearing that Philippe is part of a gang in school. Sweet! I hope he gets a headband or something!

The meal was excellent…some chicken and bumblebee desert prepared by the lovely Annie. No complaints at all from the meal.

Eric showed me these exercise videos he is taking called Insanity. Surprisingly most of the things in the video were EXACTLY what Vero and I did the week before in Cardio Kickboxing so now I’m wondering if the instructor gets inspiration from these videos. I am also contemplating trying out the videos for myself but I’m not sure I will have enough motivation to keep up for an hour (read: it’s a lot harder to bow out when you have twenty women in the class still going strong!).

Tonight I have an actual kickboxing gym to go to so we’ll see how that turns out. I think Vero will enjoy it while I may find cardio kickboxing to be more up my alley. My three goals towards exercise are as follows: #1 with a bullet is to have a stronger heart as heart problems are prevalent in my family. #2 to is to lose weight. #3 Have more energy. I could care less if I have muscles.

Man Meets Cardio Kickboxing (and Lives!)

Carrie would be amused. I attended a cardio kick-boxing class last night along with Vero.

Years ago, in a short stint at the gym with my roommate Carrie, she would try and get me to go to a cardio class with her. I believe the words “You’re off your rocker!” and “Not until the Smashing Pumpkins reform!” were uttered. The main issue for me was these classes seemed to only house women. While some may think that’s not a big deal (and perhaps a bonus), I did not want to be ‘that’ guy in the gym room.

Fast forward five years and clearly I have come to terms with this hang-up. We drove to the Bob MacQuarrie complex and signed up for the cardio kickboxing class. Not knowing what to expect, we stood around with a bunch of women until the class started.

Start it did! Some booming music and an instructor who didn’t stop for 60 minutes. Yowza! I can probably count three times where I thought I was going to die…mostly from exhaustion, but at one point my leg was cramping up bad and my right ankle was hurting. I think I may have rolled it or did something while jogging years ago as this always seems to pop up when I do something active.

No matter, I made it through a fairly easy routine of kickboxing moves. There were a few moves that bewildered Vero and I (punch, spin, kick, elbow, hand to the face, moustache move, The Shark, Watusi) but for the most part I could keep up with the instructor.

There’s no chance to take a look around at others during the class. I was trying to keep up with the routine and that takes total concentration!

But the greatest motivation of all to keep going for 60 minutes? The 20 women and one older gentleman kicking my ass in terms of athletic ability! There’s no way I was going to bow out in the middle of it!

I got what I wanted out of it…I just wanted a workout. Vero wanted something a little more…some ACTUAL kickboxing was more up her alley. So we’re going to try a class and see what it’s all about.

Review: Something Old Something New – Lynn Johnston

At Costco I stumbled upon a Treasury Edition of the For Better or For Worse comic strips by Lynn Johnston. Growing up with them, I was intrigued and I took a closer look.

A few years ago, Lynn Johnston had decided to end the comic strip that we all love about the Patterson family, and that was that. Or was it?

She then decided to start from the beginning and insert/change existing strips to flesh out some more story, change some strips. From the sounds of it, it sounded exactly like George Lucas vs. Star Wars. I remember Trish talking to me about this and we didn’t know if it would fly or not.

The first Treasury Edition presents a chronological retelling of the Patterson family from the first strips and when necessary, inserts ‘new’ strips which are placed in the timeline. There is an asterisk beside each new strip and also personal comments on various strips…perhaps a note about the inspiration of a certain strip, or why the choice to go back and add more strips.

I must admit that it is pretty great. I read a third of the book last night and laughed ridiculously at a few points. I had forgotten how much I love Lynn Johnston’s writing. The Treasury Edition is great as well…I enjoyed reading her comments about certain story elements, or the need to flesh out a character’s backstory when she didn’t think of doing so when she originally wrote it.

A third of the way through the book, I can only see one strip that has changed and they actually include the original to compare with the new one. It basically makes John sound less of an ass. I did enjoy the fact that they did include both of them for archival sake.

So, if you enjoy For Better or For Worse, I would highly recommend the first Treasury Edition even if you own the collections. They include new strips as well as insight to what was going through Ms. Johnston’s head.

Mom, I picked up a copy for you so remind me to give it to you when you come down next!
