Music on the iPad

It’s a given that I’ll be picking up an iPad. But I’m really enjoying the thoughts of what the iPad can do that are coming out right now.

For example, let’s talk about music on the iPad. No, no, I’m not talking about music, I’m talking about sheet music, or more importantly (to me!), GUITAR MUSIC/TABS!

Gizmodo’s article made me realize that instead of hauling a bunch of binders full of music, I can simply have them loaded onto the iPad and set it up on the music stand! NICE!

Granted, it would really suck if someone bumped into the music stand and the iPad went flying!

But I already refer to all my music on my computer when I’m playing and don’t bother with my binders unless I’m playing elsewhere. Also, it would keep things nice and organized and I could conceivably do a search for a song title or an artist.

I wonder if it would be large enough though. I wouldn’t think there would be a problem, but you never know.

You would want to find a way to secure the ipad to the music stand. Look how many times that music stand gets bumped around as the evening progresses and more and more beer is consumed. That leads me to my next question….is it beer/water proof?

What about a song that has multiple pages…can you set up the ipad to scroll the song so you don’t have to stop to “flip to the next page”?

I’m using my iPad as a fakebook using the Good Reader document viewer ($0.99) to organize and navigate GIF (single-page) and PDF (multi-page) images of lead sheets. Works quite well, but lacks annotation capabilities. With over 900 pages loaded (Real Book, Vols. 1 and 2) it takes too long to scroll to the bottom of a full list of titles; Good Reader supports hierarchical folders, so I’ve sorted the charts into “A”, “B”, “C”, etc. folders to make the title lists easier to navigate.

Works just fine with a lead sheet printed on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. More complicated stuff, especially reductions of oversize pages, can be kinda hard to read (at least for my tired, old middle-aged eyes.) I depends mostly on the number of staves per page.

You’ve got that right! The first time I took my iPad to a combo rehearsal it almost went flying when the stand got bumped. My current quest is to find a way to mount it on a mic stand. I’ve found a mic stand attachment that accepts a standard VESA mount as well as a couple of not-yet-shipping VESA adapters for the iPad. For now, a couple of bungee cords and a music stand will have to suffice.
