Trish’s Rant

Since Ryan has been gracious enough to let me be a guest ranter on his blog, here are a few things that I need to vent about today. For the past few days I have had that fabulous Band-Aid song “Do They Know Its Christmas” stuck in my head. This stems from the compilation of my Fromage de Noel album, which will be on sale shortly.

In this song, we distinctly hear our very own Bono, champion of poverty prevention, sing “Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you” in reference to the poor starving children of Africa. Thank God the children are starving in Africa? Doesn’t sound very charitable to me. For a guy who is so quick to tell us all his political views and insists during his concerts that we call our political leaders and share our views on poverty, he might have put a little more thought into that line. (editor’s note: I think Trish is on crack.)

Another line that gets me: “And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime.” Is this as opposed to every other year when they do get snow? Do you really think snow is their biggest concern? I mean really, it is fabulous that all sorts of famous singers got together to save the children of Africa through song, but I think they could have put a little more effort into the lyrics. (editor’s note: Who says there isn’t snow in Africa? I think Trish should do some research on this one.)

The Simpsons also agree with me. Please refer to the episode “Radio Bart” where Bart uses a microphone and pretends to be an orphan boy named Timmy O’Toole, who has fallen down a well. Celebrities from Springfield and Sting put together their own Band-Aid.
Sideshow Mel: Though we can’t get him out, we’ll do the next best thing…
McBane: We go on TV and sing, sing, sing! (well, if it was in the Simpsons, I can’t deny Trish’s comments above.)

In other ranting news…ever since I have had a car again, I have been noticing that there are a lot of stupid people out there. For instance:

  1. The guy who ran the red light where Wellington and Bronson cross and nearly smashed into me. Dangerous corner anyway because of that large cement wall that blocks your view of traffic.
  2. The moron who parked his car about 1 foot from the lights at the corner of Parkdale and Somerset (or whatever Somerset turns into) so that when you make a right turn you nearly smash into his car.
  3. People who do not change their driving techniques when the roads are covered in a sheet of ice. And last but not least
  4. People who spend their money on recording equipment instead of on winter tires and endangers themselves and the rest of us innocent people! (sorry, couldn’t resist adding that one…) (editor’s note: HEY! I brought the car out and the tires are fine. I even took it for a few skid runs and she’s a beaut.)

Ok. Done for now, but don’t worry. I am just getting warmed up. I’ll be back (it’s up to you to imagine the Terminator voice here).

Crystal meth is the new crack.

And the editor would be wise to be nicer in his notes if he wants his essay reviewed…

I will edit it…
I also think Trish is on crack.

Ryan, you can invite trish to log in with her own username and post comments, from the blogger site. You invite her e-mail address.

Yes, You, Mike and Someone else kicked my ass at arm wrestling.

To other reading, I only arm wrestled once.

I would rather have control over posting Trish’s rants. This is…after all…Palmer’s World. Not a collaborative world (as of yet. I’m sure Trish will convince me one day)

Trish, I’m with you on this one. Actually, I’ll take it one step further, I think Bono is annoying. He has gotten overly vocal about his political views and it’s really turned me off. I admired him when he was a lot more subtle but over the last few years he’s become obnoxious. He’s too pushy! Once again, TURN OFF! The last U2 album I bought was “All that You Can’t Leave Behind” — well, I’m leaving them behind… but I’ll take their older music.

I heart Bono.

I like what he’s doing.

I think that when I’m a big rock star, I’m going to use my powers also for the greater good.

If it doesn’t work…oh well, at least I tried.

But of course…to each their own.

They are still a kickass band. I won’t give up the music because of their political views. Heck, even the other bandmates say they don’t always agree with Bono’s ways…but they make kickass music and that’s what counts.

Although I will admit that their new album isn’t their best work. Doesn’t mean I won’t buy their next one though.

Trish would not have full blown admin rights unlss you gave them to her.
Granted I don’t know what the difference between admin and non admin are, but I think they can both add posts.

Oooh…a collaborative world. Ryan, that might be your most ingenius idea yet! :o)

Thank you Mel! I am glad I am not alone in the idea that Bono is getting too pushy. And a concert should be about the music..not about calling Paul Martin! If you have to be political, do it on your own time, not on concert time. I paid good money to hear the band, not to listen to lead singer’s views on the state of our government.

I agree, you go to a concert for music.

You are not there to get your daily feed of anti-Liberal literature, he might as well be selling something that he will get money for, push pepsi, or sprite.

Although it would be cool if he started singing the Juicy Fruit jingle, and then smashed his guitar.

I agree with both sides. Rock stars should voice their opinions but not try to force their views on others. If you make a comment here and there I respect you for actually taking time to pay attention to what is going on in the world.

That being said once you have made your statement, leave it alone and let the people make of it what they will. All too often some of these views come from misinformed sources and the all too impressionable and mislead young fans take it for gospel instead of actually verifying said information from reputable sources.

Mike

Dearest Trish, you must remember that Bono is Irish and therefore a drunk. The Simpsons episode you refference about Timmy O’Toole has a strong connection to the Irish and therefore Bono, the drunk. Timmy O’Toole is from the Irish folktale “Tim O’Toole and the Wee Folk”. On top of that lets not forget about the episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets voted in as the head of sanitation in Springfield and gets on stage with U2… Coincidence, I think not. So as to any concerns you have about this bandaid song, remember, Bono was probably bingeing when he sung those poetic pearls of wisdom!

I agree with the last anonymous comment: all of an artist’s best work comes from an altered state of mind.

For example: singers and music writers do their best when they are drunk or high on crack. Painters and writers in the beginning of the 20th century used to get high on absinthe and create masterpieces…

So the morale of the story is… (help required)

The moral of the story is, if the artist has enough time to have a political view, they are not high, and therefore will not create good music.

(moral) …look at how far we’ve fallen. It seems that the creativeness we’ve once expected from our artisit has been in decline for sometime. I mean if a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear? If your an African Muslim or part of some tribe(how about pigmies?) do you know its Christmas, probably not and nor do they even care. They don’t have a decent loin cloth let alone do they need pitty because of the lack of snow. The last time there was snow in Africa at Chirstmas the wolly mammoth was crusing around. Which brings me back to if a tree falls in the forest. Now there’s a political message from a Canadian whom was part of our own contribution to the musical and political landscape, tears or not enough, Anne Murray is a babe!

If I wanted to listen to non-political artists, I would listen to mindless pop music or euro-trans. There is a time for each thing.

When I listen to U2, to Dylan, to Gabriel, to Geldolf I expect them to be political and if by change I get to see them live, I hope they will speak their word.

If “the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears” but Tears are Not Enough where does that leave us?

If Bono cared so much about getting his word out he and whoever the other guys in the band U2 are wouldn’t be charging $200USD for a ticket.

All hype, just like the XBox 360 and the housing boom!

Your right, it could very well just be a play for publicity, as long as he has something controvercial to talk about, people will want to hear it.

That’s funny. I don’t recall paying $200USD for a ticket to U2 show.

In fact, they were $49.50 for the General Admission.

I think the most expensive ones were $100 for the 100 Level at the Corel Centre.

Now…as for the people who could not get tickets from anyone other than scalpers…that’s an entirely different story.

The actual price is not really the issue. The point is, if Bono really wanted to get his point across he could hold other sorts of gatherings free of charge.

No, they were $200USD and you got a free ambilical cord with all the stem cells you could suck down. Its a conspiracy and its bigger then the Toronto Maple Leafs lack of consistancy, which by the way, should be “leaves”! I guess what I’m trying to say is that George Bush and his policys have ravaged the third world to the point where Bono now has to take his smaller private jet to visit to show us, the West, how terrible things are, coming from a multi millionare it doesn’t mean alot, hey if he had any conscience he’d donate his entire fortune to the African drug lords and let then distrubute it to the people just like they distrubute our millions of dollars of tax dollars to all the “needy” people. Fuck Bono and just nuke Africa…
