Van Damme, Move Aside

Last night, Vero and I headed to Embrun to try out a kickboxing class. Now this is different than a cardio kickboxing class where it’s an hour of pure cardio…as in you do not stop. As in, perhaps I could have died.

We took a beginner class which showed up some basic moves and gave us a taste of what we would be signing up for. It started out with some stretches (where I realized that there’s no way I was as flexible as everyone else) and then five of us beginners went into a separate area and got some beginner instructions which showed us some typical punching and kicking movements. After we ‘mastered’ those, I partnered up with Vero and she held onto some pads and I got to punch and kick them and then we switched. Then we grabbed the medicine ball (where the heck did a ball get a name like that? It was like a taste of bad medicine!) and did some strength training…lifting the ball over our heads, doing sit-ups, etc.

All in all, this is what kickboxing seemed to be about. I had fun with Vero but now I’m wondering if it is not lined up with my goals of what I want to get out of fitness. I essentially want a good workout and I found that I was dying after cardio kickboxing whereas I was able to live a little better after this kickboxing session. However, I’m not saying it’s easy…it’s hard! Very hard.

I think I will see what Vero decides as well and perhaps look into other activities as well. Now that there is some snow on the ground, perhaps we can go cross country skiing again. The one thing I am afraid of is falling into the ‘gym-trap’…where I sign up for an extended period of time with good intentions and then just waste my money by not going. I would rather drop in when I feel like it, pay a little extra premium and get what I want out of it.
